Whānau Water Safety Program

We’re excited to announce the launch of our new Whānau Water Safety Program which has been heavily discounted for Ngāti Ranginui whānau over the upcoming school holidays, thanks to sponsorship received from Apollo Projects. Spaces are limited and on a first-in first-serve basis.

What’s the Kaupapa:

Our Whānau Water Safety program is designed to equip whānau with essential skills and knowledge to ensure safety in and around water. In addition to water safety practices at the beach, pool, or lake, the program also includes important safe boating techniques. Whether you’re on the water or near it, this program will help you and your loved ones feel confident and prepared to respond safely if a family member gets into difficulty. All too often whānau members drown while saving other whānau.  This course allows those who visit the water together, to learn and practise together.. like having a fire evac plan in your whare.

Who Should Attend:

This program is perfect for whānau with tamariki/rangatahi of all ages. Whether you’re new to water activities or simply want to reinforce safe practices, our course content is tailored to provide valuable information for everyone.

Course Content:

  • Safe Boating: Learn what to do if you or a whānau member falls out of a boat and how to keep your tamariki safe if you’re all overboard.
  • Dry Land Rescues: Techniques for signalling for help, performing dry land rescues, and using everyday picnic items as rescue equipment.
  • Rips & Currents: Understand how to identify and navigate rips and currents safely.
  • Lifejacket Safety: Properly fitting lifejackets for all whānau members to ensure maximum safety.
  • Identifying Drowning vs. Playing: Recognise the subtle signs of drowning and differentiate them from normal water play.

Program Details:

  • Baywave TECT Aquatic & Leisure Centre
  • Lunchtime and afternoon sessions available on Friday 4th, Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th October
  • Course length – 1.5 hours
  • Cost $10 pp ($25 pp to other participants)

This is not just an educational experience but also a fun whānau activity that will keep the kids busy during the holidays and provide enjoyment for the entire family.
