Tuna Ora Wai Ora Project | Mahinga Kai

Tuna Ora Wai Ora Project:

Wānanga Tuatoru ki Wairoa 29/30 May 2023

  • Te Mana o te Tuna Strategy
  • NRI Te Mana o te Wai Portal
  • BOPRCF Fish Passage Presentation
  • Water Quality and Fish Passage Hikoi

Fish Passage is a huge component to the life cycle of the tuna.  It has been rewarding and a privilege to be involved in the successful recovery of 5000 moko tuna upstream and 180 to date tuna heke downstream in the lower reaches of the Kaimai Hydropower Scheme.

We are working on a relationship document to work out to the community as a new means to improve communications.  Most of what to expect is local expertise and designed tools to assist with tuna recovery and passage as a fundamental to value of mahinga kai for Te Mana o te Wai.  These include:

  • Data Collection
  • GIS Map and Te Mana o te Wai Portal
  • Tuna Strategy
  • Water quality kits

Regional Council are presenting at the next wānanga end of May about its development of the Fish Passage value and the policy development work around setting rules.  Tauranga City Council recently shared a presentation and site tour of the Tauranga municipal water supply recently at the March wānanga.

The Bay Conservation Alliance offers a 12-week environmental course that we encourage you to enrol in and we sometimes take tuna sessions.
