 Job Title: Kaiawhina – Residential Whare

Job Overview: We seek compassionate and dedicated kaiawhina to join our team at Ngā Peka Titoki, where we provide a safe and supportive environment for at-risk individuals, including children and adolescents facing unique challenges. Kaiawhina play a crucial role in fostering a positive and nurturing atmosphere, ensuring the well-being and development of residents in our residential whare. 

Responsibilities: 

1. Direct Care and Support:

  • Provide hands-on assistance and supervision to residents in their daily activities, ensuring their safety and well-being. 
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes residents’ social, emotional, and physical development. 
  • Assist with hygiene routines and mealtime support.

2. Observation and Reporting:

  • Monitor and document residents’ behaviour, emotional well-being, and physical and emotional health changes. 
  • Report observations to the supervisory team and collaborate on appropriate interventions. 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of daily activities and incidents.

3. Crisis Intervention:

  • Respond calmly and promptly to crisis situations, following established protocols and ensuring the safety of residents. 
  • Collaborate with the manager and social worker to implement crisis intervention strategies. 
  • Participate in ongoing training related to crisis management and de-escalation techniques. 

4. Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with residents and colleagues to create a positive and respectful living environment. 
  • Collaborate with social workers, therapists, and other staff members to implement individualised care plans. 
  • Engage in regular team meetings to discuss resident progress, challenges, and upcoming activities. 

5. Promoting Independence:

  • Encourage and support residents in developing and maintaining independent living skills. 
  • Provide guidance and assistance in educational and recreational activities that promote personal growth and skill development.
  • Foster a sense of community and belonging amongst residents.

6. Qualifications:

  • Education or training in caregiving, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is a plus. 
  • Previous experience working with at-risk populations, preferably in residential care.
  • Ability to maintain composure and make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to follow protocols and work effectively within a team.
