Ngāti Ranginui proudly attended the recent National Iwi Chairs Forum held in Tāmaki Makaurau, where our chairs, guided by the wisdom of Te Toka a Tirikawa, made the important decision to remain engaged during the Minister’s visit on the final day. In times of political uncertainty and challenge, it becomes even more critical for us to stand united, strengthening our advocacy and fighting for the rights, well-being, and aspirations of our people.
By participating actively in discussions with ministers and key political leaders, we assert our place at the table and ensure our priorities and values are heard. Ngāti Ranginui understands that these engagements are not only about dialogue but about influencing decisions that impact the future of our iwi, our whenua, and our mokopuna. In these challenging political moments, it is essential that we stand firm, amplifying Māori voices to ensure that our people’s needs and aspirations are at the forefront of national decision-making processes.
We were also honoured to uphold the tono of our gracious hosts, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, staying as manuhiri and continuing to support the mana motuhake of each iwi present. This collective strength, demonstrated through unity and partnership, reinforces the power of iwi collaboration in advancing kaupapa that will benefit all of our people. By working together, we not only uphold our own mana but also contribute to the collective strength.
As we reflect on the kōrero and challenges of the forum, the whakataukī “Ki te matekai tō hoariri whangaia, ki te matewai whakainumia” reminds us of the importance of generosity and reciprocity, even in moments of tension. Our resilience, cooperation, and determination remain steadfast as we continue to push for progress and build enduring partnerships that will empower and uplift our iwi.
Ngā mihi nui ki ngā kaihautū o te hui, ngā rangatira me ngā whānau i tautoko i ngā kaupapa i whakawhitiwhitia i tēnei hui nui.
